課程概述

This course intends to introduce to the graduate students research methodologies
commonly used in the field. 

課程目標
We will cover both nonexperimental and experimental research approaches, but
will focus mainly on the latter. Besides research designs, we will also talk
about hypothesis formation, research ethics, and report writing.

Homework 
15% 
Homework will be assigned accordingly. You should turn in the assignments typed. As we will discuss homework in class, NO late assignments will be accepted. 
2. 
Critiques 
15% 
You are required to attend at least 5 GIL talks throughout the semester. You may choose whichever talks you are interested in. Notice that even for topics/subfields that you are not particularly interested in, you can still learn a lot from the speakers, e.g., the presentation style, the overall organization, etc. For each of the talks you attended, you are required to submit a one-page, typed, single-spaced critique. The critique should include the following: (1) Summary: the summary should be no more than 300 words. You should NOT copy directly from the abstract/handout/Powerpoint provided by the speakers, but should instead try to digest as much as you can and come up with a summary on your own. (2) Potential topics: you should come up with one potential topic related to the talk that you might be interested in doing and sketch out possible ways in carrying out the project. All critiques should be handed in the following Monday after the talk. Please put the critiques in my mailbox by 5:00 pm. Otherwise, they will be regarded as late. 10% of the grades will be deducted for each late day.

Midterm

The midterm will cover material from the first section of the course. No make-up exams can be given except in the case of dire documented medical emergencies.

Final

The final will be comprehensive. No make-up exams can be given except in the case of dire documented medical emergencies.

Course Project 
25% 
You are required to write up a proposal on a topic of interest. There will be a presentation period at the end of the semester. Five milestones, described below, are set throughout the semester for the course project. (1) CP1: background and research questions (10%) This should include the general background that leads you to this topic and the specific research questions you plan to ask. (2) CP2: literature review (15%) This should include reviews of literature relevant to your project. The papers included should be directly related to your study in terms of research questions, methodology, or theoretical backgrounds. (3) CP3: methods (20%) This should include an outline of the methods used in the study. You should carefully lay out the details regarding the target language(s) of study, speakers, equipment used, procedure, analysis criteria, etc. (4) CP4: planned analyses (20%) This should include a clear layout of the planned analyses. You should learn how to present your plans in a self-explanatory fashion. Please take advantage of graphic and table formats when suitable. (5) CP5: presentation (15%) Presentation will be on 6/12, Monday. You will be given 5-min presentation time slot—4 min for the actual presentation itself, and 1 min for questions and answers. During this time-slot, you are to present your proposal in a convincing way so that your audience will deem your topic of interest and of significance. The style of presentation should be formal. You can use whatever media you please. You will be graded on both your presentation skills and audience response. (6) CP6: Final report (20%) This is due on 6/19, Monday. 10% of the grades will be deducted for each late day. It should be no more than a 20-paged, double-spaced, polished report incorporating all the comments you have gathered throughout the semester, including the final presentation (CP5). The report should follow a formal format, with at least seven sections—abstract (CP1), introduction & literature review (CP2), methods (CP3), planned analyses (CP4), and references (CP2).
